Who We Are

LOTW started in the fall of 2000 with 5 families over a Bible study in Pastor Greg’s house. In December of 2000, 10 families gathered to worship in a movie theater. Six months later, the church moved to a shopping center on Hwy 377. In 2003 we moved to our present location and expanded our facilities in October 2014. Light of the World is a medium sized ministry averaging around 400 in worship each Sunday.
The vision for LOTW is to reach out to those who are not currently active in their relationship with Jesus Christ. Throughout the years one thing has remained constant – about one half of all people who choose to make Light of the World home have not been associated with or going to church for 3 or more years. We also seek to offer ministries that change the lives of others both within and outside of the walls of this congregation. We sincerely desire to do our part to make our community a better place.
We are a part of the LCMS – Lutheran Church Missouri Synod- Our theology (or understanding of God) follows the Bible-based teachings of Martin Luther that inspired the reformation of the Christian Church in the 16th century. The teachings of Luther can be summarized in three key phrases: Grace alone, Faith alone, Scripture alone.
Grace Alone: God loves the people of the world, even though they are sinful, rebel against Him and do not deserve His love. He sent Jesus, His Son, to love the unlovable and save the ungodly.
Faith Alone: By His suffering and death as a substitute for all people of all time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Those who hear this Good News and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him.
Scripture Alone: The Bible is God’s Word without error, in which he reveals His Law and His Gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ. It is the only rule and norm for all Christian doctrine.
Christ Centered – Jesus is the head of the church. Everything in life should be done to honor and glorify Him. The ministry of LOTW and of the church should focus on nothing other then following Christ with our collective heart, mind, and souls.
Law and Gospel Focused – The temptation of church is to either make it a feel good experience, or to look down on those “sinners” whom everyone likes to think themselves as being better than. At LOTW we teach the whole Bible; God’s law against those actions and attitudes that violate His Word and His gospel of forgiveness to all of us who fall short of his expectations for a godly life.
Bible Based – We believe that the Bible is the true Word of God. It is without error and is both authoritative and as relevant in our lives today as it was 2000 years ago. The scriptures are the sole source of teachings about God at LOTW.
Outreach Oriented – After His death and resurrection and before ascending into heaven, Jesus instructed his followers and the early church to go to all nations and make disciples. We believe the church’s focus should be outside of the walls of the church and that on every street, in every workplace, and in every school, our members should share the good news of Christ to those they encounter on a daily basis.
Relevant – The scriptures do not teach us that there is only one way to reach people for Christ. In fact, God’s Spirit is living and active and uses aspects of every day life to reach people for Christ each and every day. Our ministry, music, and message must continually be communicated in relevant ways so that people see that the God of the Old and New Testament is still the God of today.
Innovative – We do not believe it is necessary for the church to be cutting edge on every aspect of society. Yet we also do not believe that the church should be confined to do things the way it always has. The ministry at LOTW is structured to allow for change, freshness and innovation.
Life Changing – The word of God is powerful and life changing. People who encounter the Word of God must be changed by that Word. We desire our members to spiritually grow and develop as a result of their interaction with the Word of God at LOTW. It is not acceptable for us to not grow or to become stagnant in our faith.
Developing Servant Hearts – It is important for our members to see themselves as a critical component of God’s plan for salvation. We are obligated and privileged to use the gifts that God has given us to serve his church and to serve those around us who are in need. As believers, we are the hands and feet of Christ.
Youth and Children – The community around us is filled with children. We live in a day and age in which the Word of God is not taught in schools and most homes. This makes it all the more critical that the church does not see itself as just another cool place for the kids to hang out and be entertained, but that the church takes seriously the words of Christ when he commands us not to cause one of these little ones to stumble, but to raise them up in the way they should go and when they are old they will not depart from it.
Equipping Families -We provide professional counseling at LOTW free of charge to our members because we believe that strengthening individuals and marriages also strengthens the family. We also believe in providing resources to our members so that they can learn to pray and teach God’s word at home. Strong families make for a strong church and strong community.
